HGT Develoment helping the community fight radically against GBV

Cluster Gbv, Substance abuse, Psych and Counseling

The Northern Cape MEC of transport safety and liaison Nomandla Bloem expressed her concern in the increase of cases which involves GBVbut also commended the multi disciplinary approach from other relevant departments and the community safety structures. Glen Otola also stated that contact crimes had an overall increase of 58% and requested crimes in the province. Some of these cases involve Devon Oviesdubbed the "Gordonia Butcher"who stabbed his sister 15 times.Jason Witbooi who raped three girls aged 1112 and 14 in kimberley. We as HGT Development have been working specifically to prevent and respond to GBV.Our programme delivers GBV case management and psychosocial support to survivors including through safe spaces and outreach teams. As an organization we try our outmost best to educate the community about GBVas we believe that GBV is a learned behaviour. That means it can be unlearned.Communities need to know what GBV looks like and how to react when they see it.One of the biggest barriers to ending GBV is that survivors are often not believed when they speak up Beyond believing survivorswe ensure that we create a safe space and that they have the support they need after reporting their abuse. We also ensure at minimumsurvivors of abuse and recovering drug addicts have access to quality healthcare(including psychosocial support)economic assistance and shelters. As HGT Development we are not biased we prioritize the mental health and psychosocial support for both the survivor and perpertrator.Survivors deserve comprehensive psychosocial support to recover from an act of GBVwhether one-time or protracted. However perpetrator's of GBV also need and deserve resources to build and maintain their own mental wellness. Many perpetrator's of GBV are not inherently "bad" or malicious but during a crisis such as conflict that leads to displacement or a pandemic that leads to lockdowns and job lossessmany lack the emotional resilience to navigate the stresses of an uncetain situation. This is especially true for men growing up in cultures where their sense of manhood is questioned if they can no longer provide for their families.
